bicycle front fork maintenance

1. Clean the inside of the rubber sleeve.

The rubber sleeve is a very effective protective layer on the shock absorber column. However, it should be folded up each time you clean it, and the fork telescopic column should be wiped clean with a cloth. Regularly check the shock absorber column for damage.

2. Apply oil to the telescopic column.

After each maintenance, apply a few drops of lubricating oil or a thin layer of grease to the telescopic column. This will ensure the shock absorber column maintains excellent condition for a long time.

3. Disassemble the shock absorber

The disassembly method varies depending on the type of shock absorber. All suspension forks have fixing screws, some on the outside and some on the inside. For air suspension forks, all air must be released before disassembly. Please be sure to read the instruction manual accompanying the shock absorber to understand its internal structure before disassembly.

4. Clean the inside of the shock absorber

Wipe away all dirt accumulated inside the shock absorber with a cloth. Remember, do not use any solvents, as this will damage the internal components of the shock absorber. Also, check for any internal damage.

5. Apply oil
Apply a thin layer of grease to the inside of the shock absorber column. A good fork oil should not corrode the Teflon coating on the inner wall. Applying oil to the spring is useless, but it can prevent noise from the shock absorber spring.

6. Install the shock absorber
Do not overtighten the screws during assembly. Wipe away any excess grease and replace the dust cover.

7. Adjust the air pressure of the shock absorber fork
Some shock absorber forks (SID) require pressure checks at least 3 to 4 times a year. Never use an air compressor to inflate them! The internal capacity of a fork is limited; inflating it with an air compressor will damage internal components.
